Proposers and Seconders must have been Ordinary or Honorary Members of St Helier Yacht Club for more than 3 years and should have known the Candidate personally and well for a period of not less than 2 years. This rule may be waived for applications for Overseas and Temporary Membership (see below).
Before proposing or seconding an application, you should ask yourself how well you really know the candidate; whether in your opinion the candidate would take a real and active interest in the Club and support the Club generally; whether you would invite the candidate to crew with you; whether the candidate will "fit in" with other Members and whether you think Members, in general, would wish the candidate to be a member. The candidate should have a real interest in boating.
A letter from the Proposer supporting the application must be submitted with the Application Form.
Applicants who, for any reason, are unable to have their applications proposed or seconded by eligible members of the Club, may submit an application supported by a written character reference, which should preferably be from a responsible officer of a Club or Organisation of which the applicant is a member.
A list of candidates for election to membership will be posted on the Club Notice Board for a period of seven days prior to the Executive Committee meeting at which their election will be considered, which will normally be in the same month as the interview. Comments from Members regarding any candidate are always welcome, and should be made confidentially in writing to the Honorary Secretary.
Successful Candidates will be notified in writing, normally within a week of their election, and will be invited to assume their membership on receipt of the Letter, Constitution and Rules and their membership card(s). Successful candidates, being "on probation" are not offered immediate full membership of the Club upon election, but full membership will be automatically granted after 1 year, subject to the acceptability of the membership to the Executive Committee.
An unfavourable decision by the Committee will be communicated in writing to the Candidate's Proposer, who will have the responsibility of informing the candidate accordingly. The Committee will not give any reason for this decision.
