St Helier Yacht Club Rules

CLUB RULES ISSUED UNDER RULE 8(e) OF THE ST. HELIER YACHT CLUB CONSTITUTION.

REVISED AND RE-ISSUED JANUARY 2007
THESE RULES ARE SUPPLEMENTARY TO THE CLUB CONSTITUTION, WITH WHICH MEMBERS ARE EXPECTED TO COMPLY.

Staff members are authorised by the Committee to ask members to conform to rules regarding dress and behaviour or to leave the premises.

Membership

The Membership Committee will normally be appointed each month and consist of a Club Officer and one member of the Executive Committee. All prospective new members will attend with their proposer or seconder.

The only exceptions are as follows:-

  • The married or long-term partner of an existing member (See Joint Membership).
  • Junior members who have at least one parent or grandparent as proposing member.
  • Overseas and Temporary members may, if not available to attend the monthly meeting, be introduced to a Club Officer at a time other than the meeting. Documentation will be checked by the Secretary or Manager before the introduction.

New Club Members
New members are not offered immediate full membership of St Helier Yacht Club upon approval of their application, but “full” membership will be automatically granted after 1 year, subject to the acceptability of the membership to the Executive Committee.

Joint Membership
There is no Jointmembership under the Club Constitution, it is merely a concession granted in 1956 for couples to pay a reduced subscription to encourage wives/husbands of existingmembers, living at the same address, to join. This concession has been extended to include long-term partners, where the committee is satisfied that the partnership is bona fide. Applications for such concessions will normally require a supporting letter.

Family Membership
Family Membership is available to include all children under the age of 18 in a single- or two-parent family, both local and overseas.

Children Members
No formal rules are laid down as to what age the child of a member should become a member in his or her right. However, it is considered that at the age of 11 years a child of a member should become a Junior Member (or before this age if he/she uses the Club unaccompanied by a parent). After the age of 11 years the normal rules of the Club will apply regarding signing in and the number of visits to the club per year.

Non-Payment of subscriptions & Reinstatements of Membership

Annual Subscriptions are due on 1st January each year.If a Member’s subscription be still unpaid after 31st March, the constitution states that he or she shall cease ipso facto to be a Member. The Club will endeavour to give due warning in advance of the member’s failure to pay, but lack of such warning will not affect the automatic cessation of membership.

In such event, the member must apply in writing to the Committee for reinstatement. This isnormally given with the member being requested to complete a direct debit and pay the subscription and an administration fee by cheque. If the following year the member again fails to pay his/her subscription by 31st March and again requests reinstatement, the administration fee will be an amount up to the current entrance fee.

Cheques
If a member’s cheque is refused by the bank, no other cheques will be accepted until the outstanding amount, together with any bank charges, has been paid. The member will be advised to reimburse the Club within 7 days.If the amount has not been received within this time, a further period of 7 days will be given and the member informed that an administration fee will also now be payable; he/she will also be advised that if payment is not received within the time allowed, his/her membership will be suspended at the end of this period and the money recovered through the Petty Debts Court. The Committee may, at its next meeting, confirm the suspension or terminate the membership.

If, within a period of 3 months, a member tenders further cheques in the Club (after repayment has been made on the first cheque) which are again refused by his/her bank then an administration charge will be made. The Committee will also consider, at its next meeting, whether to suspend or terminate the membership of the member concerned.
