Commodore's February Newsletter

With the first month of 2024 behind us, racing commences again at the Club, with the start of the Spring Series, which is sponsored again this year by Seapower Marine. It is a six race series over three weekends. Online entry is available here.
We have had our first evening talk of 2024, organised by St Catherines Sailing Club. It was given by Phil Aikenhead, a professional boat builder and sailor. He joined Team Philips in 1998 as a composite builder, support crew and sailor. The talk was in aid of the new St Catherine's safety boat and is the first in a series, aimed to inspire young sailors through breathtaking stories of sailing adventures.
Chris and Sue Parlett, Martin and Heather Speller will be giving the next talk, telling us of their canal adventures in Brittany at 18:30 on the 28th of February. They will be covering everything you need to know to cruise the canals, with highlights and anecdotes along with some dos and donts, all illustrated with pictures and charts and a Q&A at the end.
There will be the option to stay on for supper in the clubroom afterwards, so please reserve your spaces for the talk and the optional meal with the office on 732229 of office@shyc.je.
Then, we have Peter and Gill Pitcher giving a talk on the 28th of March. They have travelled extensively all over Northern Europe, over the last 30 years in their motorboat Seawolf. During this time they have written over 40 articles about their adventures. They have recently been awarded the Martin Broom Memorial Trophy by the Broom Owners Association, for their articles in the magazine Sweeping Statements. We are working on further talks, which we hope to publish shortly.
Burns night was a tremendous success, with dancing led by the Jersey Ceilidh Band and was another sell out organised by our Social Committee. The next event is the Caribbean evening which is already another sell out event. I hear there have been numerous tastings of the punch to get it just right!
