A message from Chair of Sailing

Published 12:23 on 15 Feb 2020

As I write, the UK has barely recovered from Storm Ciara and Storm Ines is barrelling in from the Atlantic, causing traffic mayhem on the island with Denis hot on her/its heels. I am afraid it doesnt look good for our season opener on Sunday and we made an early call yesterday to postpone. The safety of our sailors is the highest priority in such circumstances, and I hope that in another two weeks things will have calmed down for Spring 2.

Off the water, we hosted a fantastic evening with a presentation by David Mossman from Marlow Ropes. This was attended by over 50 sailors and, by way of our policy of greater interclub co-operation, members from Royal Channel Island Yacht Club  and St. Catherine's Sailing Club were invited. There are plans in the making for a similar evening either late this year or early next to cover other useful and informative topics. We are also about plans to invite other companies (sailmakers or riggers) and will keep you informed as plans progress.

Attention all racers and potential racers. The committee is running a briefing meeting on Wednesday 26th February 18-00hrs when we will spend about an hour with various members of the sailing committee covering topics such as changes to NORs & SIs, online entry for races (with demonstration),  clarification regarding submission of declarations, protocols for protests, engine use when racing, race officer duties,  as well as information on  the IRC club scheme and the Parish Race. Check the event details here and let us know if you will be attending.

The aim is to use this informal, semi-social meeting to encourage current and potential sailors to optimise the systems we have available so as to simplify their racing experience. Even if you have not raced before, or have had some time away from racing, please come along to meet the committee and other members and learn what we have been doing to improve the racing experience at SHYC.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Fair winds,

Nick OHare  Chair of Sailing Commitee
