2023 Rallye Hubert Race Report

After another enjoyable and quite wild "sleigh ride" of a downwind sail to Granville for the David Johnson Trophy in which eleven boats participated, only three crews continued to take on the "Iron Man" of sailing that is the Rallye Hubert. We are indebted to the directors of World Sailing who asked SHYC to run this event and I am delighted to announce that we have been awarded the honour of running it again in 2024.

In addition to the sailing bit, the challenge involves a mind bending quiz, compiled again this year (with our thanks) by Joyce Barber and the scavenger hunt. This year a further factor was introduced being "support for Granville hospitality economy", which, as I am sure you understand further complicates a formula of which even Alan Turing would have been proud. The crews of Altair and Knight Star fought particularly hard for dominance in this category and exhausted themselves to the point that many were virtually unable to speak coherently by the time the challenge was completed

Congratulations to those crews who took part, namely those of  Electric Blue, Knight Star and Altair.

I am pleased to advise that for the second year in succession Knight Star again prevailed in the Rallye Hubert challenge with a consistent performance throughout all elements even with the self inflicted handicap of a rope around the prop. Altair also wrapped a rope and as this appears to be such a popular tactic, consideration is being given to including it as a compulsory element next year.

Congratulations to Knight Star for winning the Rallye Hubert and JackRabbit for being the first boat over the finish line in the David Johnson pursuit race.
