Make your nautical dream come true with the 2025 Jersey Clipper bursary

Islanders hoping to achieve a nautical ambition are invited to apply for the 2025 Jersey Clipper Bursary a £1,000 cash award aimed at furthering maritime endeavour.

The bursary, which also offers a £500 runner-up award, is designed to assist an Islander of any age to fulfil a particular nautical dream. This could, for example, be a trip on a tall ship, attending a training course, participating in a watersports competition or competing in an ocean race anything with a maritime theme.

The annual award, a legacy from the three Jersey campaigns in the Clipper Round-the-World Yacht Race, was established 18 years ago through the generosity of Dandara, Les Pas Holdings and UBS.

The successful applicant will follow in the wake of 2024 winner Jersey College for Girls student Bertille Bacquet, a young sailor who hopes to compete in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The Jersey Clipper Bursary changed my sailing pathway, explained Bertille. I was selected for the Crew4Gold GB sailing team performance programme in September 2023 and attended weekend and holiday training at Team GB headquarters in Weymouth but the problem was training outside these sessions - I needed a boat.

The sailing in Weymouth was on 29ers, a beginners version of the Olympic class 49er boat. To properly take on this challenge I needed to step up and train on the 49er. I already had an excellent friend who was up for the challenge of helming and, thanks to the Jersey Clipper Bursary, we bought a second-hand 49er which we have named Miss-Isle.

The winner of last years £500 runner-up award, Tyler Horton, who coaches at St Catherines Sailing Club, used the funds to compete in the British Keelboat League (a racing series with crews of 4/5 using boats such as the J/70), first in the David Haw Memorial Regatta and then in the British Keelboat Final

Sailing in a variety of conditions on a new type of boat with a different racing format has given me experience that I wasnt able to get in Jersey, said Tyler. I am eager to share this experience with the sailing community, hoping to run similar events and training in the future over here and taking multiple Jersey teams to the next events in August.

Islanders can apply for the 2025 Jersey Clipper Bursary by outlining their particular nautical ambition in no more than 200 words in an email to philipjeune@gmail.com. The deadline is 30 April.
