Commodore's May Newsletter

I am delighted to have taken over from Rhys as Commodore and Im looking forward to working with the elected officers and committee members in our 120th year. I have enjoyed working with Rhys over the last couple of years and he passes on the helm of the Club in a great position.

Come Easter and it was our first rally of the year, which needed to change from the Rance Rally, due to custom arrangements and uncertainty of water levels for access to Plouër. The venue was changed to Granville, with several boats going via St Malo. A big thank you to Emma, who organised the pontoon party on the Saturday and Baz, who organised the drinks and light bites in Granville Yacht Club on Sunday.

Racing has got underway for our series that run throughout the year, except for Coastal race 1, Round the Island West-about, being plagued by light winds and further being postponed to a third attempt later in the year. The evening series has been re-introduced and we are delighted it is being sponsored by Hettich.

Come the end of April we had the Boat Show, at which the Club had a stand for its second year. Thank you to Jason for doing the organisation and helping to man the stand together with myself, Mike, Don, David, Andrew, and Chip. A really great team effort and the opportunity to not only introduce the Club to new members, but to also have a chat with our members visiting the Boat Show.

The Götheborg of Sweden arrived on the Thursday for the Boat Show and what a sight she made coming through the Pier Heads, after first firing her cannon, with the reply from Elizabeth Castle. Chip had contacted the vessel prior to its arrival, allowing us to meet the owner, captain and crew. Chip also arranged for Gabriella, the crew manager of the deck hands, to give an enlightening talk to just over 50 members of the Club, using our new larger screen in the Westward Room, which was a great success.

The intention is to use the Westward Room for more events this year, with a particular focus on our younger members of the Club, starting with a screening of the Lion King on the Saturday of the Coronation weekend.

I look forward to meeting with you over this coming celebratory weekend.
