Commodores May Update

Dear member,

This is the start of my second year in office and I would like to begin with a short reflection of what happened last year. When I started, we were just coming out of lockdown but we still had many Covid restrictions which certainly limited us in what we could do both on and off the water. I would like to thank our franchisees for continuing to keep us fed and watered during these very difficult times. Like all in hospitality they are still struggling to recruit staff and we are very aware of this and the impact that it can have on service so please be patient if you have to wait a bit longer at the bar. If any of you know of anyone who might be interested in joining the staff please let Bruno, Steve or Alan know. My daughter worked behind the bar for a couple of months last summer and thoroughly enjoyed it. She has even helped out when back here on holiday.

The Social Committee worked very hard keeping us entertained in spite of the restrictions. We had a most successful Laying Up Supper, Annual Dinner and New Years Eve party. It has been great to be able to get back to normal with a full range of social events arranged for this year particularly with the Platinum Jubilee coming up soon and a special Evacuation Race and Rally to St Malo later in June. Please keep an eye on the Social calendar and join us when you can.

Still on land I am sure you will agree that the House Committee have done a great job in the last year making the Club look fantastic both on the inside and outside. There has been other essential maintenance work carried out like the rewiring of the kitchens which you cant see but are none the less essential. There are further projects which have been delayed due to the difficulty in getting the work carried out but you will soon see the results, I hope!

On the water the Rally Committee had a difficult year in 2021 with only one rally possible, albeit a most successful one to Granville at the end of the season.  In 2022 they are making up for this with a full range of rally events. We have already had a very popular Rally to the Rance over Easter with 38 boats and approximately 100 members taking part. They are aware that many members have smaller boats which may not be suitable for going far a field. With this in mind over the Platinum Jubilee they are arranging a local trip to St Aubins Fort on the Saturday for a BBQ Breakfast. All very welcome whether in a small rib or a larger yacht. More about this soon.

Again for the racing fleet 2021 was a challenge but many thanks to the Sailing Committee changing things around to provide a full range of sailing events even if they had to be different to normal. The trip to the West Country was particularly successful. We are now well into our 2022 program with the recent Offshore race to Guernsey. Congratulations to Son of a Gun from Guernsey winning overall and Class 1, with Jack Rabbit second overall, first Jersey boat and first in Class 2. Arctic Tern was second in Class 1 and Aquafly was first in Class 3.

At the A.G.M. I was delighted that David Jones has joined us on the Executive Committee. I am sure that he will be a great asset in running the Club. I was also pleased to see that all the subcommittee chairmen have remained in place. It was decided that the joining fee would remain at £25 rather than going back to £50 and having had no increase in subs in 2022, next year they will increase by just 3.8%. The feeling of the meeting was that by keeping the subs down we should be able to attract more new members. I am pleased to say that already in 2022 we have had 34 new memberships with a total of 52 new members joining the club. If you do have any friends or family who you think may be interested in joining the Club please think about proposing them. Also to help promote the club and raise our profile, for the first time, we will be having a stand at the Jersey Boat Show so we would be delighted to see you there.

Many of you may not be aware that another benefit of membership is that you do get a significant discount if you present your membership card to the following establishments: - ACL Marine, Aves Marine, Ernies, Go-Sail, Jenca Music, Jolly Parrot Sailing, Normans, Pentagon, Poseidon Marine, Ocean Works Marine, Seapower Marine and South Pier Marine. You can also collect tickets from our office which allows you free entry to the Maritine Museum.

I am also delighted to announce that last Saturday we had a very successful marine auction with over £2,000 raised for RNLI, JLA and CIAS. Thanks to all our helpers who made this possible.

We look forward to seeing you either in the Club or on the water this coming season.
